Type I/ Type II

Type I is a way to make learning easier and more efficient for the teacher and it is very much run by the teacher rather than the student. Type I is still technology in the classroom, it is just very controlled.

Type II is much more hands on learning. Type II is a better way of teaching, rather than an easier way. The student has the most control over their learning in Type II.

Examples of Type I

1.) The first time we used computers in the classroom, all we were allowed to do was a typing program. We didn't even have any freedom in the typing program. We were only allowed to do "home row." This was most repetitive thing in the world. We would get so bored with it that we would just pound on the keys to see who could type the most letters per minute.

2.) Any kind of work on a computer where there is an instructor leading the class is considered type 1. Say there is a class project where everyone is doing the same thing. The teacher goes through it step by step until the project is done.

3.) Another type I would be as easy as using an overhead projector to show notes for students to copy.

Examples of Type II

1.) In yearbook class we were given a week, which was only 2 or 3 classes to learn how to use PageMaker. From there we were given a template and that's it. We were on our own from there. We taught ourselves how to make our page look good, and our yearbook is always the best in the state.

2.) Giving students the option of what kind of technology project they would like to do is a good type II example. There are so many different programs that you can use for a project. Giving the option makes the student in control.

3.) Using laptops/computers in the classroom to collect data and analyze it is a hands on way to learn. With a laptop it is easier to organize data and view it in many different ways.
